Sound Mirror Artist

Creative Arts students had the amazing opportunity of entering the ‘Sound Mirror’ excavation area at Clavering Road. Students spoke to the Tees archaeologist’s and local sound artist Rob Smith. Rob demonstrated how the mirror would have worked and how his creation would help with the dig, environment and culture. The students learnt that the sound mirror was the only early warning system Britain had until radar was introduced in 1938 and stood alongside five other mirrors along the North-East coast until it was demolished in the 1960s to make way for housing.
